Outer Banks Summer
The Outer Banks, for those unaware, is a long strip of sandy beaches off the coast of North Carolina.
My entire life I've been obsessed with the beach and the ocean. I always desperately wished that I either grew up in a beach town, or had a beach house. So, when the opportunity to live at the beach presented itself I was in there like swimwear (sorry).
As my freshman year of college concluded I got all the details for my summer job worked out. I packed up my dorm, moved home, packed up for the beach and began the 6 hour car ride to Corolla, NC, unsure of what this summer at the beach held in store for me.
Over the course of the summer I learned just about anything there is to know about popcorn from my job at the Outer Banks Popcorn Shoppe. I met some amazing people and had awesome roommates.
Moving away from home for college is one thing, but I think that this summer at the beach really gave me a real taste for independence. I had rent to pay, groceries to buy, a job to go to and from, new friends to meet, and projects of my own to work on.
It's a summer I wish I could relive over and over again, one that I'll always remember no matter how senile I get.
The Outer Banks will forever hold a special place in my heart.
5 Things I learned from my OBX Summer
5. Keep off the dunes
4. Don't buy watermelons at the store when you have a half mile walk home and have 2 other full grocery bags
3. Always expect rain
2. Apparently not all lifeguards carry bandaids so when hitting on one don't ask for a bandaid
1. Sunglasses should have windshield wipers for biking in torrential down pours
Some spots I recommend for food:
- Island Smoothie (ahhh-mazing acai bowls!!)
- Urban Kitchen (best salmon I've ever had)
- Corolla Village BBQ ( I had ribs for the first time here and I'm addicted now)
- Mexikind (casual Mexican food)
- North Banks
- Agave Roja
Some fun places for activities:
Jet-skiing/Water Sports - North Beach Watersports
Popcorn (Great gift!!) - Outer Banks Popcorn Shoppe
The beach - a given
Whalehead Park - The lighthouse is up here and you can pay 10$ (I believe) to climb it. They have wine tastings on Wednesdays
Corova - If you have a car with 4-wheel drive definitely take it off roading on the sand up there!! If you don't have one then there are several companies that will take you out there and show you around. This is where all the wild horses live. Up past Corolla Light.
xoxo,
Alexandra
