Croatia Day 1: Exploring Split
Split, Croatia
Sep 6 - 9
Lodging: 101 Dalmatinac Design Hostel
Transport: Bus
Booked through: SmartTrip Italy
Our weekend getaway in Croatia began with a 12 hour long bus ride from Florence to Split. Thankfully it was overnight, so I got cozy in my seat (as possible as that is) and we were off.
The bus ride really wasn't that bad, but for future trips to Croatia I will definitely be booking a flight.
We arrived at our hostel around 7 am. They served a pretty yummy breakfast of cereal, bread, cheese, deli meats, and condiments. I couldn't complain cause I absolutely love bread and cheese.
Our first day we decided to explore downtown Split. SmartTrip gave us the option to go rafting but we opted out just because of budgeting.
TIP: Uber is crazy cheap in Croatia so take advantage of that!
We Ubered downtown and got dropped off at the entrance to Diocletian's Palace. The narrow winding streets and stone walls make you feel as if you were just dropped off in the middle of the Game of Thrones set. I was absolutely thriving. When exploring here just get lost, find your way and get lost again. You'll see a lot of cute shops, restaurants and feel as if you're on an adventure.
History Note: Diocletian was a Roman Emperor in the East from 284 to 305 CE. His reign stabilized the Empire after the Crisis of the Third century. While he was emperor he also appointed 3 other officers to create a tetrarchy that ruled, which allowed him to delegate his power. His reformations to the bureaucracy and military enabled the Western Empire to survive for another 150 years. He did unfortunately initiate the worst persecution of Christians in the history of the empire, but in 324 (19 years after his reign) Christianity was adopted as the main religion by Constantine. He retired in his palace after his reign (a rare feat) and grew cabbages.
After exploring the Palace we went out toward the sea where the docks and promenade are. There are plenty of restaurants here along with a large shopping street perpendicular to the promenade.
Explore, be flexible and enjoy every moment!
