St. Petersburg - Return to the Motherland

St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is among one of the most beautiful cities in the world (in my unbiased opinion). My mother was born and raised in this magnificent city, and met my father there when he was studying abroad during college. So clearly, it holds a special place in my heart. My mom's side of the family still lives here (my grandma still owns the same apartment that she raised my mom and uncle in) so we have plenty of reasons to visit. Unfortunately, this summer was my first time being back in Russia in ten years. We used to visit every summer when I was younger, but eventually life happens and getting back becomes more difficult. 

This year with the FIFA World Cup happening, and realizing that it's just been way too long since we had a family trip we ventured back to the motherland all together.

Since we were here during the World Cup there were plenty of tourists from all over the world. Most noticeably were the Argentinian fans. We have plenty of photos with them popping in and making an appearance. The atmosphere was lovely with everyone being exceptionally friendly and just happy to be there in the name of soccer. 

The desserts in the photo above are called Pishki, which are delicious Russian donuts. My mother showed us this cafe that has been around since 1958. They are loved by locals and it's not uncommon to see a line out the door. The spot is called Konushennaya.

Getting around St. Petersburg is also pretty simple. They have a very good metro system, one of the deepest in the world (so don't be shocked by the long escalator rides). There are also above ground trollies as well as taxis.
