St. Petersburg - Opulence
St. Petersburg - St. Isaacs Cathedral and Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
June 2018
While these two churches reflect very different styles of architecture, they also reflect a high degree of shared opulence and beauty.
St. Isaacs Cathedral
After forty years of construction the church was finished in 1858, under the direction of French architect August de Montferrand. The exterior of the church was done in late neoclassical style while the interior of the church reflects byzantine style with its beautiful paintings and gold reliefs. From the top of St. Isaacs you get a great panoramic view of St. Petersburg and a nice leg workout.
Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
This church was built as a memorial to Tsar Alexander II on the place of his assassination.
Construction began in 1883 during the reign of Tsar Alexander III. Utlizing medieval Russian architecture, the church stands as a symbol of nationalism. Most churches in St. Petersburg are built in neoclassical and baroque styles which makes this particular one very unique. Unfortunately, it was undergoing some construction while we were visiting.

Enjoy,
Aleksandra
