Sicily Series: Aci Trezza

Aci Trezza
May 19 -31 2019

This summer started with a beautiful two weeks spent on the Eastern coast of Sicily in a small town called Aci Trezza. About 20 minutes north of Catania. I stayed with a host family that owns a beautiful Bed and Breakfast, just 5 minutes north of Aci Trezza. With beautiful ocean views, magnificent rose tinted sunsets and amazing people. The two weeks went by all too quickly.

During my time spent here I helped the family with any housekeeping needs in the mornings and explored in the afternoons as well as on my days off. My adventures took me to Capo Mulini as well as Aci Trezza (both walking distance) and Aci Castello. I was travelling alone, which really allowed me to immerse myself in their family culture, as well as meet new people. I highly recommend a solo trip at least once cause it forces you to step out of your comfort zone, meet new people, and be independent. One of the main things I realized is that by being alone I had no crutch to lean on to keep me from meeting new people and being interactive. Which was fantastic and much needed for me.

Aci Trezza is a beautiful little town right on the coast with a grande marina where most of the action in town happens. When going into town on any given evening you'll see all the old Italian men hanging out with their buddies, playing cards or checkers, people watching, and just in general enjoying what life has to offer. Not a bad way to spend your retirement.

One afternoon my host connected me with one of the fishermen in town to go on a boating excursion of the little islands right off the coast. Her description of him was "look for Tarzan when you're waiting in the Piazza", sure enough that's exactly what he resembled. Sebastiano is such a free spirit and genuine person. He boated me around all the islands, took me on a mini rock climb up the side of a cliff to go cliff jumping, went swimming with me, taught me how to eat barnacles (which I had no idea were edible) and boated me to the castle at Aci Castello. It was a fantastic evening, something that I feel like I would've only seen in a travel vlog or movie and not actually experienced myself. The main way I can describe it is that it reminded me of when Sophie goes on the boat tour around the island with all her "dads" in Mamma Mia.

If you ever make it to this part of Sicily and are looking for a cute Bed and Breakfast to stay at then I'd love to recommend Villa Delle Palme, where I was helping.

A dopo,
Aleksandra L.
